Shadwell Basin Housing

Shadwell Basin housing in Wapping was built in 1988. Unlike most docks in the area, which had been drained and landfilled, Shadwell Dock was left with water. It became a place for recreational sailing, canoeing and even swimming. Because of this, plans for proposed housing around the basin’s edge had to be altered in order not to obstruct the wind required for sailing. The London Docklands Development Corporation, responsible for the redevelopment of the area, split larger sites and commissioned different architects to bring variety into the redevelopment.
